Jaw / TMJ Pain

Understanding Jaw Pain and
Dysfunction

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) refer to problems affecting the jaw joint
(TMJ), surrounding muscles, and related structures of the face, head and neck.
These issues can arise from jaw clenching, teeth grinding, stress, prolonged posture, trauma, dental or orthodontic work, or arthritis affecting the joint.

Common Symptoms of TMD
• Jaw pain or tightness when chewing, talking or
yawning
• Clicking, popping, or grinding noises in the
jaw
• Headaches or ear pain without an ear infection
• Facial tension or aching around the temples or
cheeks
• Neck stiffness, upper shoulder tension or pain
radiating into the face
• Jaw locking or limited mouth opening

How Physiotherapy Can Help
A physiotherapist trained in TMD management can identify the underlying causes of your jaw pain and provide targeted treatment to reduce pain, restore movement, and prevent recurrence. Treatment focuses on relieving muscle tension, improving joint movement, and addressing contributing factors such as postural stress or habits like clenching or grinding.

Physiotherapy can help by:
• Improving tight jaw, neck and shoulder
muscles
• Improving jaw joint movement
• Reducing irritation around the TMJ
• Addressing postural and ergonomic factors
• Providing education and home strategies to
manage symptoms
• Reducing associated headaches and neck pain

What to Expect in Treatment
Your initial consultation includes a detailed assessment of your jaw, neck, thoracic, and movement patterns to identify contributing factors.

Treatment may include:

• Gentle joint mobilisation and soft tissue
techniques
• Dry needling or specific muscle release where
appropriate
• Exercise prescription
• Relaxation and habit-retraining strategies
• Education on jaw care, sleep positions, and
lifestyle modifications

Each session is tailored to your specific needs to help you regain comfortable, pain-free jaw movement and long-term relief.
